An important scoop from the guys in the Danger Room at Wired, who received documents from ‘FBI whistleblowers’. It seems that part of FBI training includes-
“…teaching its counterterrorism agents that “main stream” [sic] American Muslims are likely to be terrorist sympathizers; that the Prophet Mohammed was a “cult leader”; and that the Islamic practice of giving charity is no more than a “funding mechanism for combat.”
The revelations also include an FBI presentation called ‘Militancy Considerations’, which seeks to graph propensity for violent behaviour in the three Abrahamic faiths.
These revelations are simply a bedfellow of the targeting of the American Muslim community by their own legislature, through the ridiculous Peter King Hearings entitled- ‘The Extent of Radicalization in the American Muslim Community and that Community’s Response’. The fact that King is questioning not just American Muslims radicalization (the minuscule bit that there is) he also wants to tar the rest of the faithful by questioning their response to it. I don’t recall him holding similar hearings on the Irish-American community back in the 1980’s. As a recent study by Charles Kurzman has shown, ‘the largest single source of initial information (48 of 120 cases) involved tips from the Muslim American community.’ And indeed the focus on the extremist threat from with the American Muslim community actually means the security agencies are taking their eye off the ball on other more serious and real threats. Kurzman’s conclusion is worth quoting at length –
Muslim-American terrorism makes news. Out
of the thousands of acts of violence that occur
in the United States each year, an efficient
system of government prosecution and media
coverage brings Muslim-American terrorism
suspects to national attention, creating the
impression — perhaps unintentionally — that
Muslim-American terrorism is more prevalent
than it really is.
A recent study by the Center For American Progress has also uncovered a network of anti-Islam promoters and funders. On their own, any one of these situations should gave cause for concern. However, when you have the nations premier domestic security agency promoting anti-Muslim views, their own legislature targeting them with ridiculously named and deeply unwarranted ‘hearings’ and a network of Islamaphobic ( I hate that term) promoters and funders that cobweb through business, media and politics, its patently false to claim that there is no cause for concern in the US. Perhaps we should all just relax with a nice colouring in session?
